Turkey – All Residence Permit Renewals Now to Be Submitted In Person

What has changed

Effective immediately, any foreign national residence permit holder in Turkey intending to renew their residence permit must submit their renewal application in person at the immigration office.

Previously, only applicants whose passport had been renewed since their current residence permit was issued were required to submit their renewal application in person.

Who is affected

Clients who have hired or intend to employ foreign nationals in Turkey who are seeking renewal of their residence permits.

What to expect

Previously, for applicants whose passports had not been renewed, a postal “file dispatch” system could be used to submit residence permit renewal applications. This system has now been abolished, and all renewal applications now require an appointment to be booked for the applicant to submit the application in person.

Given that scheduling of the appointment is dependent on the authorities, the renewal application process may take more time than previously.

What you need to do

Employers who may be affected are advised to plan carefully for the residence permit renewal applications of their foreign national employees in Turkey, to ensure renewals are approved before current permits expire.
