South Africa – Department of Home Affairs to Begin Centralizing Visa Applications

What has changed?

Beginning January 2019, Department of Home Affairs will centralize the processing of all visa applications to Pretoria, South Africa. Currently, individuals applying for a South African visa/renewal can submit their application at their local South African mission or VFS office for in-country processing.
The reasons for this change are twofold. It addresses the immediate problem of the different levels of adjudication across all the missions and it is a cost-effective approach for the government, allowing some staff members to be redeployed in their home country.

Who is affected?

Beginning in January 2019, clients who will/have an employee who needs to apply or renew a South African visa.

What to expect

  • This change will significantly increase visa processing times.
  • Passports will no longer be required to be submitted for the entire application process.
