Saudi Arabia – New Electronic Requirements for Work Permit Applications

What has changed

On September 1, 2018, the Saudi Ministry of Labour and Social Development (MLSD) and the Ministry of Housing announced that foreign expatriates will be required to have a registered rental agreement with “Ejar” before being issued a new or renewed work permit. Ejar is a rental services e-network launched on February 12, 2018 designed to preserve the rights of all contracting parties and neutrally settle disputes in the rental market.

Previously, registered rental agreements were not required to be registered with Ejar for foreign expatriates who applied for new or renewed work permits.

Who is affected

Foreign nationals currently residing in or planning to relocate to Saudi Arabia.

The new requirements apply to previously issued work permits as well.

What to expect

Only expatriates with rental contracts registered on the new Ejar rental network will able to be issued or renew residence visas.

Expatriates with work permits will be be required to register their tenancy agreements and iqamas with Ejar.

What you need to do

  • All clients with current foreign employees need to coordinate with their real estate’s office in order to register their rental contracts with the Ejar rental network.
