Romanian Government Announces 5,500 Work Authorizations for Foreign Workers in 2017

What has changed

The Romanian government has announced that effective January 30, 2017, the quota for work authorizations for foreigners in the Romanian labor market will be set at 5,500 work authorizations for the year 2017. While the overall number of work authorizations remains unchanged from 2016, some categories of employment have fluctuated (please see ‘What to expect’).

Who is affected?

  • All clients who intend to transfer or hire employees in Romania
  • All clients intending to travel to Romania for long/short-term assignment or permanent transfer

What to expect

Work authorization will be approved and issued based on availability. Please see below for the various types and number of work authorizations that can be granted to foreigners in 2017:

  • Work authorizations for permanent workers – 3,000
  • Work authorizations for seconded workers – 700
  • Work authorizations for intra-company transferees – 700
  • Work authorizations for highly skilled workers – 500
  • Work authorizations for seasonal workers – 400
  • Work authorizations for trainees – 100
  • Work authorizations for cross-border workers – 100

Minimum Gross Salary and Medium Gross Salary Increased

What has changed

  • Effective February 1, 2017, the minimum gross salary has increased from 1250 RON to 1450 RON.
  • Effective February 20, 2017, per the state social insurance budget, the medium gross salary has increased from 2681 RON to 3131 RON.
