What has changed
On December 27, 2018, the Territory-Wide Identity Card Replacement Exercise commenced. Over the next four (4) years, all cardholders will have their existing identity cards replaced with the new smart Hong Kong Identity Cards (HKIDs).
Who is affected
The requirements for Identity Cards remain the same as before; people who are eleven (11) years and older exceeding a stay of 180 days in Hong Kong are required to have an identity card.
The Territory-wide Identity Card Replacement Exercise is required for all HKID holders and includes all Hong Kong residents, regardless of whether they are Hong Kong permanent residents, or residents for employment (including foreign domestic helpers), investment or study.
What to expect
All HKID cardholders are required to have their identity cards replaced during the stipulated period assigned to them by the Hong Kong Immigration authorities. The new smart HKID is a next generation card with advanced security features and tighter data security. Further information on the new smart HKID can be found at the following link.
The Territory-wide Identity Card Replacement Exercise will be conducted in phases as per the cardholder’s year of birth at any of the nine (9) Smart Identity Card Replacement Centres (SIDCC) located across the territory. Applicants are strongly advised to make appointments before arriving at the SIDCC offices for services. Further information on the first several phases and cardholder’s required action in the near future can be found at the following link.
